Holiday Happy Hour Edition: Babson Venture Capital & Private Equity Club Newsletter

Announcements

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving because now it is exams.  The time spent with family, naps, and turkey sandwiches are over.  You are going to spend 24 hours in group exams.  Try not to kill anyone.

On the bright side, we have some great BVCPE events to look forward to!  This afternoon, come out to learn about term sheets with an expert, David Gammell.  He has negotiated term sheets for Hubspot and others, but one day he may negotiate term sheets against you.  Find out how to beat him at his own game this afternoon at 4:30pm in Olin 220.

This weekend, come celebrate the holidays with BVCPE, VCs , PEs, Angels, and Babson Professors at the Bottom Line Lounge at 5:30pm on Friday.  BVCPE invites you to our Holiday Happy Hour.  Come have a drink with us and relax.  It will be Christmas break soon.

Also, on Wednesday morning, be sure not to miss "The Uncle's" visit to Babson.  Kanwal Rekhi, both VC and entrepreneur, will be visiting Babson on Wednesday, December 1, at 8AM.  He is the man to see if you are an Indian, or any, entrepreneur. In 1982 Kanwal founded Excelan which was the first to commercialize ethernet and the TCP/IP protocol, becoming the first Indian to take a company public on the NYSE.  He then lead Novell's development of Unix after acquiring it from AT&T.  Recently, he formed TiE, a venture/support organization for Indian entrepreneurs, and has been an active angel in Silicon Valley.  This spawned his nickname, bestowed by many grateful Indian entrepreneurs, "The Uncle."

If you know anyone who is interested in the club, anyone can join our mailing list by sending a blank email to join-bvcpe@listserv.babson.edu.

Announcements

VCIC training is heating up. This week we nailed down the first two training sessions on valuation and term sheets.
    •    First up is valuation with Professor Zacharakis.  Learn what's worth what  (It's less than you think.)
    •    After Thanksgiving, we will come back to David Gammell, the startup lawyer who negotiated term sheets for Hubspot, to walk us through the details of a deal, term by term.
Block out your schedule, get prepared, and learn what you need to win.

If you are unfamiliar with the competition, you can learn more about it here: http://www.vcic.unc.edu/

Past participants note: Unless you have been to the regional competition, you are still eligible to compete.  You can compete in the Babson competition as many times as you want.

Also, thanks to everyone who came out to the MassChallenge Center last Thursday! Over one hundred people turned out on a rainy night for last week's Angel Groups: Nuts and Bolts.  The angels gave many insights into their group's process and were very open to being approached afterwards by the audience.  Many took advantage of the opportunity.  There was also some great networking and conversations between Boston's and Babson's entrepreneurs.  You can read more about the event, including some of what the angels had to say and the answers from the angel's pre-panel questionnaire on their groups, here: bostinnovation.com/2010/11/05/angel-groups-demystified/

Did the event inspire you to get more involved in the Boston startup scene?  Fordors might not publish a guide, but some of the leading investors do:

Don Dodge, Developer Advocate at Google - The Original
http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2009/10/boston-startup-events-resources-people-you-need-to-know.html#

Rob Go, NextView Ventures- The Update

Now get out there and start something!
